Do you want to have a drink, while enjoying a panoramic view on the river Scheldt or the city? Sipping cocktails 46 meters up in the sky or lying back in a hammock is just your thing? You want to settle down in a laid-back urban jungle or in the courtyard of a Patrician house? Antwerp boasts a wide variety of terraces. These nine secret gems have one thing in common: all of them give you an instant sense of holiday. They are also easy to reach by bicycle or public transportation.
The Kloosterstraat in the Sint-Andries district is a feast for bargain hunters and fans of antiques, design and vintage. Fortunately, you can Take 5 Minutes in Paris just to catch your breath. Especially the romantic garden terrace at the back is a true haven. Everything about this eatery reminds you of Paris, apart from the very reasonable prices.
Behind the window of this restaurant in Antwerpen-Zuid, you will see the most delicious quiches and pies inviting you in. Nothing suggests that there is also a large garden terrace tucked away here, where you can enjoy dining with a vegetarian twist. The dishes - stews, quiches, salads and hot or cold vegetable or fish dishes - are prepared using fair ingredients.
On the other side of Antwerpen-Zuid you will find the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp. The surrounding roof terraces with summer bar of the M HKAFE allow you to soak up the sun and boast a panoramic view of the river Scheldt. Even if you do not feel like visiting a museum, you enjoy a drink and fresh dishes. And you will find art here too: an authentic mural by Keith Haring and the 'work of art of the month'.
In the shadow of the botanical garden Den Botaniek you will find De Serre, a brand new establishment, with courtyard garden at the Mechelseplein. You can have breakfast, lunch and aperitifs on the covered terrace of this historic building. Thanks to the hanging plants, moss wall and natural materials you would think yourself in an urban jungle, albeit a high-tech one. From 3 July De Serre is transformed into a summer bar, with after work events on Friday evening, live music on Saturday and brunch on Sunday morning.
Those who love a stylish interior, a touch of classical music, classic Belgian dishes and an extensive selection of beers must try De Groote Witte Arend. This café/restaurant has been located in an old, Patrician house, a stone's throw from the Cathedral since 1977. Do you fancy a drink, a quick bite or a hearty dinner? It's all possible on the soothing terrace in the courtyard.
Do you prefer higher up places? Then Skybar Antwerp is just the place for you. This pop up summer bar is located on the twelfth floor of the Lindner Hotel off the Kievitplein, near the Antwerp Zoo and the Central Station. From 1 July to 31 August you can enjoy sweet cocktails, finger food and live performances on the highest rooftop terrace of Antwerp (46 meters high!). Feeling really hungry? Then order something via Deliveroo. The beautiful view of Antwerp is free. There is lots of demand, so book your spot well ahead of time.
A sunny city garden, a relaxing atmosphere, generous portions of food and of course delicious coffee. How about a cappuccino with cookie crunch, a latte with white Maltesers or a hot chocolate with Haribo sweets? Coffee and lunch bar Esco*Bar is located in the Quellinstraat, between the De Keyserlei and the city park. You can easily catch your train, tram or bus from here. An ideal place to start or end your day visit to Antwerp.
The courtyard of city brewery De Koninck at the Albert park is transformed into a summer bar this year. And that should be taken literally: white beaches, palm trees, southern beats, hammocks, Mexican-Californian dishes and of course first-class cocktails and craft beers. Until 3 September, Smokey Jo's Cantina is your Eldorado in the city. Thanks to the colourful playground, you can also bring your children. Viva Mexico!
The well-known coffee shop Caffènation has opened up a new location in an old industrial site at the Lamorinièrestraat 161, next to the Groen Kwartier. Caffènation Roastery and Bar PAKT are part of the eco-friendly business estate PAKT. Stroll in through the large open garage door and you'll end up in a haven of peace. The terrace is situated in the shade of a large swaying tree. The atmosphere is grungy, rugged, retro and industrial, but comes with the necessary city vibes and delicious home-roasted coffee.
