Winter in Antwerp: Activities

Winter in Antwerp has everything you need to make your winter break the most amazing fun. From Saturday 8 December 2018 until Sunday 6 January 2019, Antwerp welcomes you to a magical winter wonderland. You won’t know where to look first because there are so many activities to choose from.

A festive opening with K's Choice

This year, Winter in Antwerp opens with song. A lot of songs actually because on the festival’s opening day, dozens of choirs will fill the city with their voices on different stages throughout the city. From gospel to classical music and angelic children’s voices. That day, the historic city centre will resonate with the sound of heavenly choral music. Afterwards the choirs will lead you in a procession to Grote Markt for the highlight of the day. In the evening K’s Choice will perform an acoustic concert in the square, accompanied by a pop-up choir of hundreds of singers, marking the official start of in Winter in Antwerp.

Christmas market

The ninety or so stalls in the Christmas market sell a fun mix of artisan products and original gadgets. The Christmas market winds its way from Groenplaats to Grote Markt and Steenplein. It is also a great place to score a drink and a snack. Whether you’re into traditional winter treats like mulled wine, smoutebollen (donut fritters) or bacon potatoes or prefer vegetarian or more exotic food… there is something for everyone’s taste buds. But it’s also a fun opportunity to pick up some original Christmas gifts, like jewellery, artisan honey, Christmas lights…

Ice-skating rink

The 1,200 sq.m. rink in Groenplaats is probably one of the most beautiful places to skate in the Low Countries. Take a spin under Rubens’s watchful eye or enjoy a drink in the winter bar. Your tiny tots can learn to skate with the help of a cute penguin buddy. Do you need to unwind from all the excitement? Then why not have a drink on the winter bar’s terrace? What’s more, the splendid view of the Cathedral is thrown in for free!

Tubing

We may not have mountains in our city, but we do have a slope. And this year, you’ll find it in Koningin Astridplein, in front of the world’s most beautiful station. So hop on a tube and whizz down that slide! A great way to get that adrenaline pumping.

A kiss under the mistletoe
The tradition of kissing under the mistletoe is supposed to bring you love and happiness. Which is why we are just as happy to put up a mistletoe this year. So do stop in for a loving kiss. Want to bet that it’s all happy days from here onwards?

Giant ferris wheel

The 55-metre tall ferris wheel in Steenplein offers amazing views of wintery Antwerp. And a ride in the ferris wheel is always a unique experience, both during the day and at night. Don’t worry about cold fingers and toes because all of the gondolas are closed so you can keep warm!

Wishing wall

So what do you wish your family, friends, neighbours and all the people of Antwerp for the new year? Leave your wishes on the interactive wishing wall. 2019 promises to be a special year.

Mirror tent and open-air terrace
Steenplein is the place to be for kids. There is a children’s corner with a ball pool, a slide, a crafts and reading corner in the Mirror Tent. Parents can catch their breath and relax over a coffee.
If you prefer the open air, then walk out to the terrace. And if you don’t like the cold, you can always warm your hands near the nice fire elements.

New Year’s Eve fireworks

No New Year’s Eve would be complete without a fireworks display on the Scheldt, just before midnight. Because in Antwerp people have been ringing in the New Year with a bang for many years.

Winter BBQ

Traditionally Winter in Antwerpen always ends with a Winter BBQ. So join us for a fun food fest on Sunday 6 January 2019.
