The work of Baroque masters will be confronted with that of leading contemporary artists in the exhibition “Sanguine | Bloedrood”. The Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (M HKA) invited the painter Luc Tuymans to curate this exhibition. Tuymans wants to create an overwhelming experience for visitors by establishing a dialogue between key works from the Baroque and the works of established contemporary artists, supplemented with contemporary stars.
For “Antwerp Baroque 2018. Rubens inspires”, the M HKA, Antwerp’s contemporary art museum, will contrast the spirit of the Baroque masters with the vision of several leading contemporary artists. The exhibition’s curator Luc Tuymans wants to create an overwhelming experience for visitors by establishing a dialogue between key works from the Baroque, including paintings by Georges de La Tour, Francisco de Zurbaran and Francisco Goya, and works by established contemporary masters such as On Kawara and Edward Kienholz, supplemented with new work by contemporary stars including Zhang Enli, Takashi Murakami and Danh Vō.
Luc Tuymans, who constantly strives to redefine the traditional boundaries of his practice as a figurative painter, will bring national (including an eye-catching selection from the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp) and international masterpieces to Antwerp, thanks to a series of exceptional loans.
“Sanguine | Bloedrood” is a lush visual and bold spectacular that introduces dramatic Baroque works in the experimental spaces of contemporary art.
This exhibition is jointly organised by the M HKA and the KMSKA.
