Take the free ferry between the left and right banks, which is a fun alternative to the pedestrian tunnel, which will soon be thoroughly renovated.
A free ferry now connects the left and right bank of the River Scheldt. And a ferry is the perfect solution to cross the river as renovation work will soon start on St. Anna Tunnel, or the pedestrian tunnel as it is colloquially known. The ferry sails from the jetty at Frederik Van Eedenplein to the pontoon near Steen Castle. The works on the pedestrian tunnel is scheduled to start in the autumn of 2020. Until the works are finished, people can continue to use the free ferry service.
Pedestrians, cyclists (no motorbikes) and wheelchair users (with assistants) can all take the ferry, which runs seven days a week. On weekdays, it sails from 7.15 a.m. until 6 p.m. There is a 30-minute window from 1 p.m. until 1.30 p.m. during which the ferry does not sail. On weekends and public holidays, the ferry sails from 10.15 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a 30-minute break from 1 p.m. until 1.30 p.m.
