Neighbourhood in the spotlight: Zuid

Zuid is one of Antwerp’s nicest neighbourhoods, with wide avenues, stately townhouses, lovely squares, interesting shops and a number of world-class museums. And thanks to the many cafes and restaurants, there are plenty of places where you can have a drink or something nice to eat.

Design, fashion and interior design

You really should take a stroll down the wide boulevards in Zuid. Don’t forget to look for the many unique shops in this neighbourhood. Volkstraat is lined with stunning window displays of designer products, smart outfits, interior design and unique accessories. Don’t forget to stop at no. 40 where Help u Zelve, the magnificent former headquarters of Antwerp’s Liberal Party, is located. Widely considered to be one of Antwerp’s most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings. Tip: many of the shops in Zuid are open during Sunday shopping.

Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp

The real eye-catcher, however, is the beautiful building of the Fine Arts Museum. The renovation is still ongoing but the doors to this amazing art collection will swing open again in September 2022. In the meantime, you can already enjoy the stunning exterior. Want to see what the new interior looks like? Watch the video.

World-class museums

Do you like photography? Visit the FOMU in Waalsekaai and its vast photography collection. The temporary exhibitions, featuring work by world-renowned Belgian and international photographers, are also always worthwhile. The museum shop has loads of photo books, original post cards and fascinating magazines. Up the road, you’ll find the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst (M HKA), the museum of contemporary art, film and visual culture. The groundfloor is home to the permanent collection, which includes works by such artists as Panamarenko, Luc Tuymans and Marina Abramović.

Redeveloped Scheldt quays

Are you in Zuid? Why not take a walk along the Scheldt? Because the Scheldt quays have been completely redeveloped in this neighbourhood. Take a walk along the dike and enjoy the expansive views of the wide river. Or walk down along the cobbles to the water. Here you have plenty of space to blow the cobwebs away and feel the wind in your hair. Children will love the large playground.

Food and drink

There are plenty of fun places in Zuid where you can have breakfast, lunch, pre-dinner drinks and dinner. Pop into Butchers Coffee for some good coffee. This popular coffee bar is located in a former butcher’s shop, and many of the original interior elements have been retained. Do you have a sweet tooth? Delafaille, which has been synonymous with quality and originality for over 80 years, has just what you’re looking for. At Buchbar you can warm up over a bowl of soup or enjoy some deluxe sandwiches while you browse their personal book selection. Order a drink at Vitrin to observe the hip and trendy in-crowd. At Fiskebar you can enjoy fresh, sustainably-caught and pure fish. Or why not explore the neighbourhood yourself? Zuid has something to suit everyone’s taste!
