Paul Kooiker

For Antwerp Baroque 2018, the conceptual photographer Paul Kooiker was inspired by the Baroque art of Rubens and Rembrandt.

Paul Kooiker’s (b. 1964, the Netherlands) work is about “looking”, about voyeurism, about shame and distance.  He starts from the ancient tradition and questions about the relationship between the artist and his model.  For years, Kooiker has created photos that use the nude in twentieth and twenty-first century art, by artists such as Hans Bellmer or Hans-Peter Feldmann, as a starting point. For this project, he has agreed to divert his gaze, once-only, to the Baroque of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the Baroque of both Rubens and Rembrandt.
