M HKA - Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp

The Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (M HKA) is a leading museum of contemporary visual arts, film and sculptures. It recently reopend after an impressive renovation in collaboration with Belgian designer Axel Vervoordt and Japanese architect Tatsuro Miki. Discover an open meeting place of and for art, artists and the public.

Free exhibitions

Since its recent makeover, the M HKA now also boasts a free permanent basic collection. Here, you will discover works of contemporary heroes, historical pioneers and tasters from the museum’s worldwide collection. On the ground floor, you can admire avant-garde art ranging from Panamarenko to Luc Tuymans and from Dan Flavin to Jimmie Durham. Moreover, permanent collections are displayed elsewhere in the museum.

In motion

In 1987, the museum was housed in a converted grain store/warehouse. The M HKA focuses on art from 1970 to now, spread over 4,000m². The M HKA is artistically always in motion; Artists of various ilk are regular visitors to match their vision and talent to the existing artworks there. In addition to changing collection presentations and four major projects per year, the M HKA also brings a varied programme of performances, lectures, concerts, debates, walking presentations, museum chats and museum breakfasts.

Unique entrance

In addition to a new permanent collection, the look and feel of the museum has been completely updated. For example, there is a multilingual reception infrastructure tailored to a wide and varied audience. The unique entrance, with a library/reading room as a first visit experience, is at the heart of the museum.

The M HKA is located in one of the most artistically dynamic areas of Antwerp. Het Zuid offers an interesting mix of galleries and cosy cafés. Combine a visit to the museum with a discovery of De Zuid.

Eugeen Van Mieghem (1875-1930) was a draughtsman and depicted people in the port; using various techniques he captured their lives and characters. On display in the museum are 150 of his works, as well as works by other by Antwerp artists. Visitors will gain an excellent insight into the world of this very introverted artist, whose work is once again in the spotlight in Belgium and abroad.
